Abstract

This study examines the concept of social capital and its application in madrasahs using a literature review approach. The main focus is to identify the dimensions of social capital that contribute to strengthening Islamic educational institutions, particularly madrasahs. The identified research gap highlights the limited studies that comprehensively explore social capital as a strategic asset to enhance educational effectiveness and quality in madrasahs. The objectives of this study include analyzing the concept of social capital, exploring its relationship with education, and identifying research trends related to its application in madrasahs. Employing a systematic literature review method, this article synthesizes the perspectives of five key scholars: Robert Putnam, Pierre Bourdieu, Nan Lin, Janine Nahapiet & Sumantra Ghoshal, and James S. Coleman. The findings reveal that the most frequently studied dimensions of social capital include networks, trust, and values/norms. Additionally, other relevant dimensions were identified, such as cultural accommodation, community support, institutional cooperation, cultural and religious collaboration, and social participation. This study contributes by mapping relevant dimensions of social capital in the context of madrasahs and providing a conceptual framework for future research and policy practices. The findings are expected to enrich the literature on social capital in Islamic education and offer recommendations for developing more adaptive and competitive madrasahs.
