Abstract

Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) are educational institutions that carry out the teaching and learning process or transfer Islamic knowledge. They are often referred to as traditional Islamic educational institutions native to Indonesia. The place where students live is called a pondok or dormitory, and the yellow books (Kitab Kuning) serve as the subject matter. The methods used are also considered traditional (sorogan, wetonan, and bandongan). As indigenous Indonesian institutions, Islamic boarding schools certainly have a long history. This long history gives them a strong presence within society. However, this does not rule out the possibility that Islamic boarding schools do not have problems that need to be addressed.

Globalization, modernization, and changes in student attitudes are realities that Islamic boarding school administrators must face. Globalization has become an unavoidable reality in everyday life, as it is a pervasive process that is influenced by all sectors. Islamic boarding schools should respond to these challenges, as education, inherently, follows the direction of market or consumer demand (market sentiment). The current of globalization also demands that humans be developed as quality human beings (in terms of intellectual, emotional and spiritual), and quality education is a non-negotiable price in the current of globalization
