Abstract

Huruf Pegon is an intellectual heritage of Islamic Nusantara that has long served as the primary medium for the transmission and study of classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning). However, this tradition is increasingly marginalized among younger generations in madrasah diniyah due to the absence of a systematic dedicated curriculum. This community service program aims to improve the competencies of students at Madrasah Diniyah Nurul Iman, Ngrami Village, through structured Pegon literacy mentoring. The program employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach and Service Learning method, comprising four stages: need assessment, coordination, three-phase intensive training, and evaluation using pre-test and post-test instruments. Results indicate a significant quantitative improvement in post-test scores, with an average overall increase of 59.9%. Qualitatively, the program produced a simple Pegon learning module and enhanced students' capacity to read kitab kuning and write ta'liqat (marginal annotations). This program demonstrates that collaboration between higher education institutions and madrasah diniyah is effective in preserving classical Islamic intellectual traditions such as the makna gandul method through strengthened Pegon literacy.
