Abstract

This community service initiative aims to enhance the Hijaiyyah writing skills of students at TPQ Manabi’ul Huda through structured and systematic training based on the principles of Naskhi calligraphy. The program was motivated by the absence of specific instructional activities on Arabic calligraphy within the TPQ, despite the increasing need for improved Qur’anic writing accuracy and greater mastery of fundamental script formation among learners. Utilizing a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach combined with a service-learning model, the program encompassed several stages, including a preliminary needs assessment, detailed program planning, coordination with institutional stakeholders, a seven-day implementation period, and follow-up evaluation sessions to assess learning progression. The results indicate substantial improvement in participants’ cognitive understanding of Naskhi calligraphic rules, psychomotor skills in handwriting techniques, and affective engagement toward strengthening Qur’anic literacy. Enhanced motivation and heightened awareness of proper stroke patterns and proportional script formation were evident, supported by consistent progress observed in post-test results and performance during the final writing competition. In addition to the individual learning gains of students, the training contributed to strengthening the pedagogical competencies of TPQ teachers, who benefited from exposure to structured instructional strategies for teaching handwriting. The program also fostered sustainable collaboration between the community and academic institutions, illustrating the practical value of participatory methodologies in addressing educational challenges at the grassroots level. Overall, this article provides both theoretical insight and practical contributions to community-based literacy enhancement and the development of Islamic educational practices through participatory, skill-oriented training interventions.
